Advanced Trauma Life Support-Dutch update 2008

A tragic airplane crash in 1976 has led to the development of the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS): the current golden standard for the treatment of trauma patients in the acute phase. The founding father of the ATLS, orthopaedic surgeon James K. Styner, has contributed extensively to the succesful treatment of trauma patiens worldwide. The orthopaedic surgeons in the Netherlands are actively involved in the courses and organisation of th ATLS. The essence of speaking the same language, among various disciplines involved in care of the trauma patient, is essential. ATLS has developed this language and forms a simple but effective method to limit both mortality and morbidity of the trauma patient.
