Fiber-rich bran therapy: adequate laxative for patients with diverticulosis?
Fiber-rich therapy with brans has been decribed as succesful by almost all authors in the literature. Very few complications have been decribed for this widespread therapy in use since the 1970’s. The complication “bran-plug obstruction” is only mentionned in 6 patients, all suffering from chronic obstipation. Two of these patients took higher than prescribed doses of brans. The reason for this complication in the other four patients remains unclear. There is no mention of this complication in patients with diverticluosis, treated by fiber-rich bran therapy, in the literature of the last twenty years.
